Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is not alone in his mission to unite the opposition ahead of the 2024 general elections against the BJP.
Even former MP Subramanian Swamy, who believes strongly in self-responsibility, seems to have shouldered the burden. He revealed his meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said that he should become the Prime Minister.
"Mamata Banerjee should become the Prime Minister of India," Swamy said during an interactive session at an event organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) on Tuesday (May 09, 2023) in Kolkata. She is a very brave woman. You see how she (Mamata Banerjee) fought the communists. I met him ten days ago but no one knows about it.” Swamy also said that today the country needs a strong opposition which is not afraid of the ruling party (BJP).
When asked about the meeting with the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Swamy said that during the meeting he talked about the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and how the Indian economy would fare in 2024. When asked who he considered the most powerful woman leader in Swamy said, "It was a time when I considered Jayalalithaa and Mayawati to be the most powerful women. But today Mamata Banerjee is the most powerful woman in the country. He has so much courage that he can fight on any issue. No one can blackmail TMC chief Mamata Banerjee.”
On the opposition, Subramaniam Swamy said, “I know many people today who will not take a single step against the present government because they are afraid of when the ED will come. This is not good for Indian democracy. We need an opposition party that is neither afraid nor a friend of the ruling party.
Earlier in 2021, Swamy praised Mamata Banerjee and compared her to JP (Jaiprakash Narayan), Rajiv Gandhi, Morarji Desai and PV Narasimha Rao. Also last year, Swamy, who often likes to be called "Virat the Hindu", met the CM of West Bengal in Kolkata in 2021, even after several Hindus were killed in post-election violence in the state. During this, Swamy once again praised Banerjee, describing her as a "courageous and charismatic" leader.
